Guidelines to Listening Sessions
How to navigate through a Listening session
The Tomatis® Method is desigend to be completed at home, in your and your child’s most familiar environment. This means that you will be the first one to notice changes. Changes can be one of the hardest things. Some changes can be immediate, some are more subtle; often it is other people that notice the subtler changes.
Before A Listening Session
- Drink water preferably before a session, but you may also drink water during a session.
- Allow sufficient time for completion.
- Be sure that the device’s battery is well-charged to avoid any interruptions.
- Check the correct position of the headphones.
- Adjust to a comfortable volume.
During A Listening Session
We recommend avoiding activities that require concentration or that might generate stress. You can be creative with your activities or simply enjoy the music. You can relax, play, read, do household work, humm, anything that relaxes you and put you in a comfortable place.
It is strongly recommended not to eat, chew gums, use any screens (TV, laptop, video games, smart phones…), be in a noisy place or moving vehicle (riding, driving, etc) as this will interfere with the Tomatis auditory training.
What does it feel like?
The effects you may experience are individual. The Tomatis Method is …
- a programme. Like any learning process, it required time and repetition.
- a workout for our auditory muscles.
- sensory stimulation training whereby the musical component promotes the transmission of high-pitched sounds that are particularly effective in stimulating the brain.
- a psycho-educaitonal program to help the brain to better analyse sensory information. Since we process sensory information according to our own experiences and feelings, this process has an dimension. When listening to a programme, you may be overwhelmed by new sensory information which can create new emotions which you may find difficult to grasp.
Therefore, you may feel fatigued, exhausted, irritated, impatient. You may also feel immediate well-being or have a boost of energy. Experiencing one or more of these effects can be explained by the abolition and creation of neural pathways. Thus, it is important to complete the program to reinforce these newly formed neural pathways. Please watch this video for a quick overview of a Tomatis programme.
